Various Artists - The Rhythm Lounge Vol. 1 (LARCD-002)
Joshua Glazer | All Music Guide | 2002
A Chicago label releasing a compilation chock-full of Big Apple
flavor, New York house veteran Kerri Chandler produced or remixed
four of the ten tracks here. And Chandler's classic formula of big
drums topped with wispy instruments and vocals is as pleasurable
as it ever was. "Summer Love" has an amazingly deep and
processed kick drum, while the light-footed piano, vocal, and bass
shuffle across the top, seemingly unaware that they're riding on
a dinosaur's back. West Coast house aristocrat Miguel Migs and his
Naked Music cohort Rasoul contribute "Summer Elements,"
a minimal trip-hop effort with serious R&B flavor. Elsewhere,
the Blak Beat Niks command you to do the hustle as if disco never
went out of fashion. The CD cover calls this a "collection
of Brazilian, Afro-beat, and nu jazz." Most would just call
it house music. But despite the over-abundance of similar compilations
on the market, The Rhythm Lounge holds its own by diversifying styles
and never compromising on quality.
