Stop the Press! Roy Davis, Jr. returns to Large Music! Five years
have passed since the classic Gabriel, considered by many
to be one of the most influential dance records of all time. Closer
2 U shows us that the wait has been worth it. Side A is classic
Davis: crisp beats, a driving bass line, deep Chicago keys and spiritual
spoken rhymes. Side B features the Curtis Mayfield-inspired soul
cut entitled, appropriately enough, Soul Music. These are
the sounds of a genius at work. Play Large.

Stop salivating and just put this one on the turntable. Yup, Roy's
back on form without a doubt. The title track features gorgeous
spoken words of love over a gentle backing jazzy guitar twinkling
throughout over the crisp beats and low bass, FX whooshing subtly
in and out. However, the flip features the clubber cut 'Soul Music'
which is just off the hook! An outrageously smooth yet funky bassline
propels this along, the fantastic, circling vocal just drags you
to the floor. Glinting guitar gives rippling textures - sumptuous,

Still working with that 'Gabriel'
vibe with some neat guitar work, warm organic bassline, loads of
whooshy effects and spiritual rap. Perhaps Roy's best vocal track
since that landmark release of some five years ago and the best
track on Large for a little while.
