Dennis Ferrer - Soul Collectives Vol. 2 (LAR-069)
Yogi | DJ MAGAZINE | Issue 300
A label that always delivers and here the track record is kept on
the straight and narrow with a dose of fine sax-led jazz/house.
Congas beat it out and keys not unlike those on the jazz/funk classic
'Song For The Children' by Lonnie Liston Smith prevail. Is it just
a coincidence that the title here is called '4 The Children' or
has Ferrer been inspired by Smith? No doubt about it, this is jazz/funk
for 2001. 'Call' is a stomping slice of real house with a uncredited
female vocal that tears into the Jersey flava cut. 'I Don't Know
Why' is a killer! Baaad ass garage that requires attention tout
suite Screaming, screaming vocal over the phattest baddest chunk-a-funk
that side of the pond, complete with a classic Jersey keys (a la
Cassio Ware) that cut a swathe through the groove. Great EP and
real nasty shit that's poppin' at the bear gigs. 5/5

About a year ago Dennis entered into the spotlight having moved
away from being the protégé of Kerri Chandler all
together. Following on from his debut for Jeff Craven's Chicago
label is this "Back To My Roots" homage. Orchestrating
some of the disco magic made so grand by proponents such as The
Sound Of Philadelphia you can hear Dennis own vocals on "4
The Children" heading the A-side of this value for money-spinner.
Holding a serious amount of horns, string inducements, assimilated
percussion and piano sounds certifying its perfect harmony for any
vibe. Stealing the show on the flipside is the quintessential gospel
praising "Call" with its infectious, memorable female
lead and solid bass and organ bred stabs in there too. "I Don't
Know Why" draws on the deeper sound as previously dished up
by the likes of Kerri, Jovonn or Smack with much retention focused
on the bass. Surely, an EP of wondrous classics highlighting what
clubs desperately need - now!
