Macari & Jay-J feat. Shawn Benson - Fools For Love EP (LAR-062)
Large Music is pleased to present the initial collaboration between
Andrew Macari and Jay-J Hernandez. For those of you who don't know
Jay-J, where have you been? As co-owner of Moulton Studios
his name usually appears on every great deep house record as either
engineer or producer. He is also rated by many as one of the West
Coast's finest DJs. Andrew Macari originally hails from Nottingham,
England and was one of the founding members of the Toka Project
and Filter Flow Recordings. He has since relocated to LA
and brought his deep, gritty and soulful sound to the States. Let's
give him an official Large welcome!
We are also pleased to have Sean Benson appear once again on Large.
You might remember his smooth vocal tones from the Soul Searchin
track off of the now-classic "Soul Searchin Pt. 4" album
by RaSoul.

West coast, deep house innovator Jay-J and LA-based Nottingham lad
and former Toka Project member Andrew Macari team up with San Francisco
vocalist Shawn Benson to create "Hold On To You". The track is a
happy-sounding, deep little ditty that features excellent chord
progressions, quirky little stabs and funked-up beats which all
sit tightly over a classy arrangement. On the flip "Oh Baby" has
less melody but is a typical West Coast smooth house affair, but
the vocal track is the one that gets my vote.

Over the past few years, many a deep house DJ has formed a love
affair with Chicago based Large Music. Their consistent release
of quality deepness and commitment to pushing new artists has made
them one of the premier domestic house labels. This time around,
Toka Projects Andrew Macari and Moulton Studio's Jay-J are at the
helm. The A1 cut, "Hold on to You," lets loose with a walking bass
line and some deep filtered action. Add Sean Benson's sexy crooning
to the mix, and you have an uplifting yet funky number. The flip
side, "Oh Baby," is a bit tech-ier with an ample amount of swing.
A murky bass line introduces the groove, and a piano riff skips
along the intro with an accompanied vocal hook. An aquatic keyboard
solo and light sweeping pads complete this track. I don't know if
you've barbecue deep beneath the sea, but I have, and this is what
they play. Check it out.
