Mateo & Matos - Celebrate Life (LAR-050)
Yogi Haughton | DJ Magazine (In The Box) | 29. January 2000
Congratulations to Large Records in reaching release number 50 and
holy shit, are they doing it in style. The promo is in clear vinyl
format, like that matters... Once vocalist Sam Lopez starts his
soulful action, the colour of the plastic becomes totally irrelevant,
it's what's in the groove that counts. New York home boys, John
Mateo and Eddie Matos, lay down a delicious backing for Lopez, who
glides through the soulful runnings with ease. Lopez's delivery
is methodical, smooth and to the point, the garage groove is tight,
it's modern soul perfection. The flip's "Higher" is loaded with
a great male vocal that dances over the simplistic garage runnings.
Two great sides. 5/5

Time flies. It's hard to believe this is Large's 50th release? And
what a beauty! 'There will be no tomorrow,' says Sam Lopez who provides
stunning soulful vocals on this deep house/garage crossover song.
'Got to come together and celebrate life, got to love one another
to make it right.' Never a truer word spoken. It's funky bouncy
rhythm and gorgeous chords pound deep into your heart in this cheese-free
commercial feast that will make any dancefloor go off. On the B-side
is "Higher (Take U)" which is more of the same quality production
of Sam Lopez's vocals combined with a sexy hook which is far more
underground without Ulysses 'Ace' Pena's input. "Movin' On" is also
included which is a more complex, percussive, underground and Latin-sounding
offering with sampled lyrics. And to top it all, it comes in transparent
vinyl!
