Solar House - Universal (LAR-046)

Fresh and Low's Calum Walker drops on Large with this old skool
sounding track that reminds me of early Kerri Chandler. 'Universal
Part One' uses a sampled chord groove underpinned by some warm percussion,
with a spoken word sample, while the flip contains 'Universal Part
Two' a deeper grungy groove and 'Basement Nights' which is again
more Chandler vibes. Quality deep black grooves. 4/5

Crossover vocal hits are not this Chicago label's stock in trade,
so don't expect any big choons or anthems alerts here. Large has
however carved out an impeccable reputation as a supplier of graceful
and well formed underground deep house. Scotland's Fresh & Low are
no strangers to the US game, having previously recorded for Guidance
among others, and here they carve out a heavily percussive jam with
funky Rhodes, languid horns and the usual sort of jazz-funk overtones
you'd expect from the genre. Not breathtakingly original, but good
if this is your thing. 3/5
