House Afrika gets Large
House Afrika, a record label out of South Africa releases a compilation dedicated to Large Records. Here are the original sleeve liner notes: "Never has a name been more apt: Large is as big as they come. This Chicago-based label has been at the defining edge of house music for almost a decade, and has been integral to the development of the style. Further solidifying their position, the label has just set up the Vista offshoot to concentrate on the techier grooves of artists like Inland Knights and Universal Tongues. In celebration of their pioneering spirit, House Afrika presents a selection of some of Large's latest - and largest - offerings. This collection focuses on just some of the artists on the Large roster doing damage on dancefloors the world over, but the label has, in its eight year history, already hosted luminaries like DJ Sneak, Johnny Fiasco, 95 North and Roy Davis Jnr. who, together with vocalist Peven Everett, penned the seminal 'Gabrille', one of Large's most successful releases and a staple of the UK's garage scene. One of Large's first releases, Ulysses' 'I Believe In You', was a definitive moment for the mid-nineties jazz house movement. Amongst the trailblazers on this disc are Kerri Chandler, who made his deejaying debut when he was just thirteen. In 1991, Atlantic Records signed the New Jersey resident's first production effort, 'Superlover / Get It Off', and he's gone on to become legendary for his work on a variety of labels, including Large (for whom he delivers the "Raw Grooves" and "Digital Soul" series), Shelter Records, his own imprint Madhouse, and Sfere, the label he runs with Dennis Ferrer. This latter concern has been going from strength to strength since its inception in 1999, and their deep, dark, soulful and spirited sound has just been showcased on the acclaimed "First Steps" collection. Ferrer formed the Synewave label with Damon Wild in the early nineties, and his Puerto Rican roots and his love of Philly soul gave his excellent techno productions a uniquely soulful profile. After a chance meeting with Kerri Chandler, the producer began turning out the housier grooves that can be found on the "Soul Collectives" series for Large and on output for labels like Ibadan, Basic and Metaphor Mateo & Matos have been turning out exquisitely phat tunes since the mid-eighties, and their trademark sound blends Latino, disco and jazz atop rip-roaring 4/4 rhythm tracks. They learned the art of production alongside Masters At Work's "Little Louie" Vega and got their first break in 1986 when Hector Cruz invited them to play at his infamous House Nation Club. They've since recorded for prestigious imprints like Nervous Records, Glasgow Underground, Distant and Spiritual Life. Solar House is the production moniker Calum Walker assumes for Large. One of the members of top underground act Fresh and Low, Walker is a regular on the Glagow club scene and also plays at Soul Movement and Lazy Dog in London. The title track of the "Universal EP" was immensely popular here and 'Got 2 B U' off "The Roots EP" is Large's most licensed track ever. Rounding off the line-up of legendary beat purveyors here is DJ Rasoul, whose "Soul Searching" releases are major records here and abroad. The Oakland, California resident rarely grants interviews and refuses to be photographed, letting the rich music he releases on labels like Naked Music, Leaf and Greyhound Recordings speak for itself. Rasoul - along with the other producers here - has a cache of earth-shattering music lined up for the Large label's rosy future.
